Symbol
One of Tacit's symbols, by name, drawn in a square of the size you give it.

Symbol is the part under every symbol in the kit: the rail's, a row's, a button's. Use it for a kind of thing or a place. The symbols page shows the set and the rule that symbols never stand for actions; this page is the part.
Anatomy

- DrawingCentred in the square, in one line weight.
- Square
sizewide and high. The part takes this room whatever the drawing. - Room beside itPut 16 pixels before a row symbol and 16 after it; rows do this themselves.
Styles and ink

- Line, secondary inkThe default.
- Filled, secondary ink
filled: true. - Line, main inkA symbol under the pointer goes to the main ink; the part that holds it sets
color. - Filled, main ink
filled: truewith the samecolor.
A symbol has no states and answers to nothing itself; the row, rail row or button that holds it changes its colour.
Sizes

| Token | Pixels | Where |
|---|---|---|
icon.rail | 17 | The rail |
icon.row | 20 | Rows and tools; the default |
icon.nav | 22 | Back and forward |
Accessibility
- A symbol has no states of its own and is not a stop for Tab. To press one, use an icon button.
- A symbol is hidden from screen readers. A symbol that is the only content of a control needs the control to be named: an icon button requires
label. - Tacit installs carry only the Tacit symbol font, so a name the set does not have draws nothing, not a stand-in.
tools/lint.pyreports such names.
Names
Use the name the set gives it: folder, music_note, picture_as_pdf. Names are listed on the symbols page.
